I heard a rumor that the data partition on the iPod can be re-formatted as FAT16, allowing non-MacOS systems read/write access, even as the iPod continues to function normally. Has anyone tried this?

i haven't heard anything from anyone else who's tried yet, but my roommate has experimented a bit with the file system. he formatted his ipod with HFS (not HFS+), as HFS can be mounted in linux. doing so rendered his ipod useless as an mp3 player. when we'd try to start it up it would display a folder icon with an exclamation point, then reboot and repeat.
once we've figured out how to restore it to it's original state, or apple re-releases the ipod updater, we'll experiment with it more with other file systems.

This is waiting to be posted, but I'll show it here anyways:
I've been messing around with different filesystems on the iPod since I have been reading rumors that it can support other filesystems. I've tried HFS, WIN16, and the Unix filesystem that Mac OS X has. None of these things ruin the ipod - I always could restore it back (I did partition it also, and the German site is incorrect, it is very possible to restore it back - Use Disk Utility and/or iPod Restore). The iPod would start up fine for each format, but would display the wrong capacity. iTunes couldn't copy to it either if it saw the drive.
So in other words, it doesn't work, and It doesn't show an "!" on a Folder icon like the above poster says.
