I got a copy of DiskWarrior the other day and decided I'd see what would happen if I ran it on my iPod.
For those of you unfamiliar with the program, it rebuilds hard drives (like defragging) by putting files in a more uniform order, thus improving the time it takes for your computer to access files. The really cool thing is you can have the app graph out your drives to see just how out of order they are. It gives you a visual representation and also tells you the percentage of out-of-order files.
So anyway, when I graphed my iPod''s wee drive, it was something like 35% out of whack. After fixing a few botched files, rebuilding its drive (nothing is erased, by the way. all data remains intact) and optimizing it, I found it loads songs startlingly faster, and even moves from menu to menu more quickly. Cool! My brother did the same thing with his iPod and it worked really well for him, too.
So if you have DiskWarrior, or any other drive-repairing app, I suggest you give it a shot.
FYI, though- DiskWarrior currently only runs in Jaguar; I had to install Jaguar on a partition on one of my computer's hard drives then install DiskWarrior. But it was no big deal because I was rebuilding all my drives anyway (I needed a clean install for my new Pro Tools rig! Yay!).
So give it a shot. You'd be surprised how big a difference it can make.
xoxo benny

As I recall, my pops' Windows XP setup has a de-fragging program that was included with XP; I imagine you could probably use that (assuming you too use XP). Unfortunately, I'm not 100% sure; you'll probably have to do some research on the intra-web.
Good luck.

Yes, XP comes with a defragging tool and it recognises a Windows formatted iPod.
I ran it a couple of time on my iPod and it seemed to reduced the fragmentation a little, but it made no discernable difference to the menu or song loading times.

At least for a 3rd generation iPod, when it's showing as a "source" in iTunes, there should be a little button showing an iPod icon on the bottom edge of the iTunes window. Clicking the button enables the iPod as a firewire drive. This is in the manual. (And no offence to those at Apple but semi secret pseudo cryptic is stupid interface design).

woah! i tried again and figured out that my problem whas i ren scandisk(error checking) first, DO NOT DO THIS!
what you want to do to defragment it is:
just set it to run as disk, then right click on it, go to the tools and click "defragmentation" and then defrag it.
They were right, it is soooo much faster its not even funny!!! everythign goes faster, the menus, the songs load faster, its awesome!!!

Never did see the icon in iTunes (see above postings) but was able to access the ipod with the XP operating system via Windows Exporer | then right click on the drive | select Properties | Tools | Defragment Now.

i tried defragging my ipod and with diskkeeper 8.0 and it just crashed.
..not to mention that was the second time i tried that.
The first time it crashed. But things only got worse from there. A bunch of mp3s were corrupt and the additional files i store on my ipod went corrupt. I had to wipe out my entire ipod and reupload everything.
Put it this way: if you're gonna defrag your ipod, back up the entire drive just in case.

Does anyone know of any free defragging programs on the net for a Mac?
If I'm not mistaken, there are none pre-packaged with OSX (10.2. .
-by "free" I mean freeware/shareware!
thanks
