As ThinkSecret reports, we may be hours from an announcement from Apple of an update to the iPod line. An unconfirmed tip points to the possibility of an iPod update as early as tomorrow [Tuesday, May 8th], with a touch-screen iPod taking center stage.

The information, which comes from an unproven source, suggests that Apple will show off the new iPod tomorrow but will hold off on shipping the device until later in June when the iPhone ships. ThinkSecret reminds readers that the timetable cited in this report contradicts earlier tips from more proven sources, which indicate that the 6G (presumably widescreen) iPod is not scheduled to debut until late in the year.
The fact that the touchscreen technology, expected to debut with the 6G iPod, is finalized and ready to go lends some plausibility to this new report. As with all rumors, time will certainly tell. Stay tuned.

Barbarian Software has just released version 0.1 beta of Magnetosphere, hands down the most amazing looking and mesmerizing iTunes visualization plug-in we have ever seen. To quote its creator: Here is this thing that does stuff in iTunes. There is magnetism, there is gravity, but on top of all of that, there is awesomeness. Watch as all the dots and ribbons go bouncy bouncy when you play music and trigger this mo-fo of a visualizer. This is the future of visuals. God help you if you smoke the reefer cause you can kiss your productivity goodbye. If you are even remotely amused by the standard iTunes visualizer, you owe it to yourself to check out Magnetosphere. This plug-in is available for iTunes for both Mac OS X and Windows.Happily, despite the amazing visuals, Magnetosphere is not the most CPU or GPU-hungry visualization plug-in out there. [UPDATE: ...though, after enjyoing Magnetosphere on our 3GHz quad-Xeon Mac Pro w/ ATI X1900 XT gfx, we note that it pushes our 1.42GHz G4 Mac mini a little harder... Amazing!] Take hold!

Creative Announces Zen Stone "iPod Shuffle Killer"

In a move to thwart Apple and the diminutive 2G iPod shuffle, Creative (who just announced its first iPod accessory line) has just announced the Zen Stone. A screenless unit like the shuffle, the Zen Stone is able to playback songs in linear fashion or shuffled at random. The unit sports 1GB of flash RAM storage, supports MP3, WMA, and Audible playback formats, and provides up to 10 hours of playtime. Creative is offering the Zen Stone in 6 glossy colors: black, white, green, blue, red, and pink. And most importantlty, the Zen Stone goes for $39.99, $40 cheaper than the iPod shuffle.
The Zen Stone will hit the shelves on May 14th, with a number of Creative accessories following over the next few months. Among them is the TravelSound Zen Stone, a portable speaker dock offering 20 hours of playback on two AA's. Without an on-screen interface (or a screen, for that matter) to mimic, Creative may have, in the Zen Stone, its most compelling iPod alternative. Will Creative put Apple between a...Stone...and a hard place, with this latest?
