Tony Fadell had a vision. Take an MP3 player, create a music sales service to complement it, and build a company around it. Tony shopped his idea around but no one was interested. No one...but Apple.
Thus begins the tale of the iPod that we all know and love today, a tech toy phenomenon. Wired is running a story entitled "Inside Look at Birth of the iPod" which tells the story of just how the iPod came to be. The piece looks at Tony's roll as well as that of Ben Knauss, former senior manager at PortalPlayer, the folks who had the OS / music player in the works that allowed them and Apple to bring it all together.
Knauss said at one of the first meetings with PortalPlayer, Fadell said, "This is the project that's going to remold Apple and 10 years from now, it's going to be a music business, not a computer business."
This article is a fitting read, here just days after the rollout of the new 4th generation iPod. Many may be surprised to hear just how much Steve Jobs owned the iPod creation process. Very remeniscent of his tight grip on the Macintosh project in the early 80's. Have a look.
