Well, it was only a matter of time... The clever folks over at CodeARM have ported the popular mid-90's id Software title, DOOM, to the 3G iPod and iPod mini. The game offers a modest framerate and is limited by the low resolution of the iPod screens (160x120 for iPod, 138x110 for mini) and its ability to render only 16 shades of grey. But as you can see in the photo below, despite the limitations, the display does make for a playable game.

Controlling the character on the mini with its clickable, radial navigation wheel is much easier than using the 3G unit, which requires use of the row of buttons below the screen that are arrayed in a manner not ideal for 3D, first-person-shooter gaming. Unfortunately iPod DOOM does not run on 1G/2G iPods, which feature the game-friendly radial button arrangement.
Plug in your iPod earbuds and you will be treated to the full array of explosions, ghoulish moans, and roars that are signature to this classic game. Interestingly, the game's normally synthesized background music is played as an AAC file, throughout.
The fact that DOOM can run on the iPod, at all, should solicit a nod to Apple in chosing the powerful 133MHz, 32-bit ARM7TDMI processor core to sit a the heart of the entire line of music players. So now that this is done, the question is: What's next?

UPDATE: For (much) more information about playing DOOM on your iPod, have a look at the iPodLinux.org port.
