MacWorld UK reports that the massive iPod ad campaign and the incredible popularity of the iPod may be putting it on UK criminals' hit-list. Street criminals are able to easily identify iPod users by the matching, distinctive, white earbuds that Apple shipts with the units and these users are becoming targets of muggings. 22-year old Roland Baskerville was one such victim.
Roland was walking near his home, listening to his iPod, when a stranger approached, pointed to his headphones, and asked if he was listening to an iPod. When Roland replied in the affirmative, the mugger pulled a knife and said, "well, hand it over then." Farewell, iPod.
We have not heard many such stories taking place in the United States. We would be most interested in hearing any unfortunate mugging or close-call stories of the like. When does the desireability of a hi-tech gadget turn it into a liability?
