HP Says No WMA For iPod
2004-01-13 23:53:55

Earlier this week we posted a report indicating that HP was working with Apple to bring the Windows Media Audio (WMA) format to the iPod. Shortly after posting we started getting a picture of the background / history of the source of that piece of information and updated our story to indicate that the claim may not be, well, quite reliable. As it turns out, our doubts were well founded.

Muffi Ghadiali, HP's digital entertainment group project marketing manager, in a recent Wired article, stated that there are currently no plans for adding WMA support to the iPod.

"We picked the service that was the most popular (Apple's iTunes Music Store)," said Ghadiali. "We could have chosen another format, but that would have created more confusion for our customers."

So for the forseeable future, it's just AAC and MP3 for iPod'ers everywhere. (Not such a bad situation, really.)
