iPod Issue (Bug) With Lengthy MP3's

As posted in our message forums by 'babymac', there is an issue with the iPod and particularly lengthy songs. With MP3's that will not fit in the iPod's ~20MB RAM cache, the iPod's hard drive spins during the entire duration of the song, rather than simply loading the current song (and a the next few) into the cache and shutting down the drive. As stated by 'babymac':
"I heard about this bug on the Apple iPod support message boards. I was skeptical about it, so I verified it myself: Without headphones connected, I started by playing Tortoise's "Djed." This is a 192 kbps MP3 and is just under 21 minutes in length. I held the iPod up to my ear to hear the hard drive spin up. Sure enough, more than a minute into the song the hard drive was still spinning."
It appears that playing a song while the hard drive is constantly spinning uses about 3x the power of normal playback, resulting in much less than 10 hours of playback time. The higher the bitrate of your music, the shorter (in minutes) it needs to be to fill the iPod's cache. Something to be aware of. Perhaps this will be addressed in an iPod update in the near future.
