All of us here at iPodHacks have, in the past, been avid Apple Newton users and still have a few in our collection of devices. Recently we pulled them out, dusted them off, and took a look at what's possible with these devices today, here more than 5 years since its demise.
The community has remained active over the years and certain dedicated folks have labored to keep the platform viable. To cite a few examples, an ATA driver has been developed as well as a web server package, not to mention iSync-like iApp syncing as well as plenty of other general applications that are still being released. Did you know that Apple's Inkwell handwriting recognition technology in OS X came directly from the Newton?
One of the more interesting finds, however, is Eric Schneck's iTunes Plug-in for Newton. This plugin, coupled with the MAD Newton MP3 player application, allows the Newton to Sync with iTunes much as the iPod does—albeit much more slowly, and be used as a portable MP3 player. A drawback is that, at present, the sync plug-in appears only to work with iTunes versions 1 or 2. An impressive effort, surely and something to take a look at if you're a closet Newton junkie.
