Apple Releases iPhone / iPod Touch SDK

Apple, today, announced that the same APIs and tools that are used internally to develop iPhone applications will be released as a free download to developers.
The SDK includes an updated version of Apple's Xcode development suite as well as an iPhone emulator to aid in testing applications under development. The SDK is Mac-only, requiring Mac OS X "Leopard" v10.5.2.
The SDK broken down:- Cocoa Touch: Multi-touch events, Multi-touch controls, Acceleromter, View Hierarchy, Localization, Alerts, Web View, People Picker, Image Picker, Camera
- Media: Core Audio, OpenAL, Audio Mixing, Audio Recording, Video Playback, JPG, PNG, TIFF, PDS Quartz, Core Animation, Embedded OpenGL
- Core Services: Collections, Address Book, Networking, File access, SQLite, Core Location, Net Services Threading, Preferences, URL utilities
- Core OS: OS X Kernel, BSD TCP/IP, Sockets, Power Management, Keychain, Certificates, File System, Lib System, Security, Bonjour
Various new iPhone applications were demoed during today's event, including an AOL IM client and the games Spore from EA and SEGA's Super Monkey Ball, both utilizing the iPhone's accelerometer.
Apple revealed that native iPhone applciations will be distributed through the iTunes Store by way of wireless download in an arrangement where the developer gets 70% of the developer-set price. The ability to download these new apps will come with the iPhone 2.0 update which is currently in beta and will be available in June as a free update to iPhone users and at a small fee for iPod touch users.
Apple's SDK is currently available as a free download, but developers will be charged a $99/year fee for publishing applications through the iTunes Store.
