It's hard to believe it's been so long, but on October 23, 2001 - five years ago today, Steve Jobs unveiled the iPod to the media at a special Apple Event as a Mac-only product. As some may recall, the unveiling was viewed as anti-climactic to many. "Oh. A music player. Yay." Few could imagine just what a phenomenon was being born that day, and just what a revitalization of the music industry it would bring.
Happy birthday, iPod. It's been five great years!
It is with much fond remembrance that we here at iPod Hacks look back at that time. In just a few weeks our own five year birthday will be upon us; on November 14, 2001 the first post here at iPod Hacks went up. (See our first 50 posts at our Back In Time page, nostalgia buffs.) I'm also compelled to mention that even though it was three weeks before iPod Hacks saw its first story, yours truly had the opportunity to report on the birth of our favorite digital music player on the day-of...just on a different site. Here's an amusing forum post from that day, as well. Note a few choice reactions to the news:- "Great just what the world needs, another freaking MP3 player. Go Steve! Where's the Newton?!"
- "I still can't believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player? I want something new! I want them to think differently!"
- "gee! an mp3 player with a HD! how original! kinda reminds me of a JUKEBOX i once knew.."
- "$400 for an Mp3 Player! I'd call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time...and it's not really functional."
- "All that hype for an MP3 player? Break-thru digital device? The Reality Distiortion Field is starting to warp Steve's mind if he thinks for one second that this thing is gonna take off."
Great stuff. Apple has sold about 70 million iPods and some estimates project this year's holiday sales alone at over 50 million units. It seems folks warmed up to the idea.
And while we're all looking back, have a look at the first iPod TV ad ever. "iPod. 1000 songs in your pocket." A great beginning.
