Apple's popular iPod Hi-Fi speaker set has received much praise and is laying down a satisfying groove for many an iPod listener across the land. But at $350, it's not cheap. For an alternate solution, why not take matters into your own hands...and build one. That's what the folks at Arawak Art Solutions did. And they built it out of two old Macs.
That's right. These guys took two vintage Macintosh Plus cases, gutted them, cleaned them up, loaded them with hi-fi components, and produced the iPod Hi-Fi mini. Driven by a Sonic Impact Technologies Class T Amp the iPod Hi-Fi mini sports one woofer and one tweeter per speaker. It can use wall AC or battery power, and unlike Apple's single-enclosure iPod Hi-Fi, Arawak's creatation gives you true stereo separation!
The stylish units can be operated with the acoustically invisible Macintosh faceplate "grille" in place or removed. What's more, these guys have rolled their own version of DRM into the mix with this unit:Worried about Digital Rights Management? So are we. With the iPod Hi-Fi mini we've gone the extra mile. Although the 400k floppy disk drive has been removed we were left with the nagging feeling that someone would figure out how to slip a disk through the slot and copy at least part of a song. Have no fear. Introducing Dr Mesh, a high tensile grill that neatly fits the floppy drive slot preventing even imaginary piracy, yet allowing sound through unimpeded. What about those times when you realize that the song being played may not have been legally acquired? That's why the paper-clip hole remains in place. Once you'd use it to eject a recalcitrant disk, now we've carefully angled the hole so that, with a simple lunge, you can pierce the speaker cone, stopping piracy in it's tracks. Being massive retro computing fans here at iPod Hacks, we just can't express how much this project has impressed us. Bravo guys! See more pics of the unit at Flickr, here. Why not build one yourself?
