Is Apple Evaluating iTMS Movie Download Service?
2006-03-02 08:14:35

Is Apple in the process of developing an iTunes movie download service that would offer full-length feature films to iTunes customers with broadband internet connections? According to a recent AppleInsider report, it seems quite possible.

AppleInsider reports that Fullerton, California-based Coyote Insight held a survey this week that asked participants questions related to a potential "iTunes movie service" which would provide movie downloads to a computer or iPod in an on-demand fashion. From the survey:
"This iTunes service would provide access to 1,000 movies on demand which can be downloaded to your computer and, in turn, to your video iPod if you have one, or even your television if it is connected to your computer."
The survey goes on to explain the nature of the proposed download service, and how it differs from the current iTunes model.
"The first difference is you would need to have a high speed (broadband) Internet connection such as DSL or cable modem to use the service. The second difference is access to the movies is offered on a monthly subscription basis."
$9.99 per month is the proposed fee for this download service, which would offer access to a catalog of thousands of new releases, updated monthly, AppleInsider reports. It seems subscription is not the only model being evaluated, as an alternative method was outlined.
Instead of subscribing for $9.99 a month to download the offered movies, another option is to buy the movies individually. You would be able to select any movie available on this service, download it to your PC where you can keep it as long as you like. You would be able to view it on your computer as well as play it on your video capable iPod.... The cost of purchasing movies individually would be approximately $12.95 per movie or roughly the equivalent of buying a DVD at a store."
In the buy-the-movie-outright scenario, both the ability to burn to DVD and a restriction from doing so were examined.

It seems clear that Apple is headed for the living room. What with the new Mac mini being rather ideal for home theatre use, rumors of an imminent video iPod and of things even more profound, honest to goodness movie downloads from the iTMS just seem to make sense. We'll keep you posted.
