Yesterday we reported that sources point to an upcoming "video iPod" with a large, 3.5" screen and an on-screen, virtual clickwheel, replacing the physical wheel on current iPods. A recent patent application filed by Apple may lend confirmation to these rumors.
Application No. 20060026535 describes a mode-based graphical user interfaces for touch sensitive input devices. The abstract of the application is as follows:A user interface method is disclosed. The method includes detecting a touch and then determining a user interface mode when a touch is detected. The method further includes activating one or more GUI elements based on the user interface mode and in response to the detected touch. Accompanying the patent are illustrations of the technology in question, which depict an on-screen, virtual clickwheel overlaying what is an unmistakable rendition of the iPod's user interface. In our mind, this patent application and accompanying illustration ad notable confirmation to the rumor of the upcoming video iPod.
In addition to this, a Blogspot posting recently went up, featuring three images that the poster claims are the "New iPod Video," depicting a "full front screen" iPod design, with a roughly 16:9 aspect ratio and on-screen clickwheel. It is quite possible that these pictures are Photoshop depictions of what is to come, rather than photos of an actual unit.
Stay tuned.
UPDATE: Rain Day Magazine has posted an article with some intriguing mockups of this rumored unit.
