As Mac fans everywhere are aware, the annual Macworld Expo San Francisco 2006 begins today, with Steve Jobs' always-anticipated keynote taking place tomorrow (Jan. 10th) at 9 a.m. (PST). As always, there are many rumors, hints, and subtle indications floating around as to what may be unveiled by the CEO in the black turtle-neck. A summary of these follows.
- iPod Expectations:
With the release of the iPod nano and the 5G "video" iPod being so recent, Apple is not expected to bring much in the way of major shifts in the core iPod line at MWSF. The only expected update is to the iPod shuffle, which may see a redesign and increase in storage capacity. (The shuffle is currently available in a maximum capacity of 1GB or ~240 songs.)
There are also indications that Apple may be expanding its line of iPod accessories, including the iPod boombox ,which, rumor has it, is different from "anything Apple has released in the past," and may see mention during the expo.
- Mac Expectations:
The big news this past year was the announcement that Apple will be transitioning the Macintosh from the PowerPC CPU architecture to Intel x86. Initial indications were that the first Intel-based Macs would arrive in the first half of 2006, with the last units (likely the pro Power Mac machines) completing the transition in late 2007. There are recent indications, however, that the release schedule for the initial Intel-based Macs is actually a bit more optimistic, with some sources pointing to the debut of the first machines during tomorrow's keynote.
The general feeling seems to be that the first machine to unveiled will be the Intel-based iBook. Following that, or possibly set for announcement at the same time, will be the iMac and Mac mini, according to rumors. The CPU expected to power these new Macs is Intel's new, efficient Yonah, a dual-core processor based on the Pentium M.
A last minute rumor that, if true, would likely mark the biggest surprise of the show indicates that Apple may be unveiling a series of plasma, flat-screen displays featuring an integrated Macintosh based on Intel's new VIIV technology. The rumored displays are said to be available in 42" and 50" models, accompanied by a 12-button remote, sporting an LCD display.
- Other Expectations:
Apple's iLife suite is expected to be updated as iLife '06, which may feature iWeb, which is speculated to be a web design application.
