Creative's Zen Vision:M 5G iPod Rip-off
2005-12-07 10:55:41

Wow. We've seen iPod knock offs from other companies before, but this one takes the cake. Creative has it's take on the 5G iPod (though that understates the matter, really), known as the Zen Vision:M. When you see it you might think your vision needs adjustment—no, you're not looking at an iPod.

See the translated Creative Japan press release here.

Looking at them face-on, the Zen Vision:M looks almost exactly like a 5G iPod, both featuring almost exactly the same face dimensions. Looking at them from the side, however, reveals that the Zen is nearly twice as thick as the iPod, giving it 76.7% greater volume and 22% greater weight than the svelt 5G. Creative has added a touch of originality to the mix by making their unit available in the color green, in addition to Apple's black and white. The most dramatic difference in appearance is the Zen's use of a vertical scroll pad as opposed to a radial touch control.

The on-screen interface of the Zen does little to differentiate it from the iPod; it is, from what we have seen so far, almost identical to Apple's intuitive menu system.

Like the iPod, the 30GB Zen features a 2.5-inch, 320x240 color screen and is capable of playing back video in addition to music tracks. Supported video formats are: WMV, MPEG4 and DivX 4/5, MPEG2, MPEG1, and Motion-JPEG. Supported audio formats are: MP3 and WMA. Creative claims 14 hours of battery life for audio playback, 4 hours for video.

See Engadget's post for close-up photos.
