We've recently received some interesting information from a contact working for Apple. This is definitely rumor material, and some of it rather difficult to believe, but due to the nature of the contact, we've decided to post what we've heard.
What we have been told is that there will soon be a new iPod announcement, possibly at the upcoming WWDC (May 6-10). Apple will roll out a "PC version" of the iPod with modified firmware to work with a Windows-based, iTunes-like application provided by RealNetworks (of all people), who Apple is rumored to be partnering with on this endeavor. Apple, we are told, will be pushing audio heavily, in general, in the near future.
Sounds a bit outlandish, especiall the alleged partnering with RealNetworks (bigtime QuickTime competitor) on this one. As with all rumors, only time will tell. Salt to taste.
UPDATE: Interesting followup quote to this posting from 'joefreshman' who wrote: "that would be interesting, considering the fact that RealNetworks has asked me to add iPod connectivity to their RealONE player as recently as 4 weeks ago."
UPDATE: Confirmation of this rumor has come from a recent post at MacRumors.com where it is reported that a user who has been on target with past Apple "inside info" leaks indicated, back in February, that a PC version of the iPod would soon be forthcoming.
UPDATE: Lending further credibility to the above rumor, our source also made mention of the imminent release of a 17" iMac while telling us of the PC iPod. Apple's release of the new eMac (the PowerBook was seriously upgraded as well) today stands as further confirmation of the validity of this source's info. (We had not posted the 17" iMac rumor as it seemed too far fetched... Go figure.)
