Toshiba has announced that it will be adding an 80GB model of the 1.8" hard disk Apple has been using in the (non mini) iPods. Currently the highest capacity drive in this form factor is 60GB, which is the drive found in the iPod Photo. The new 80GB unit will utilize two disk platters, each able to store 40GB of information thanks to Toshiba's success in implementing a new perpendicular storage technology. While the magnetic particles on most hard disk platters are arranged flat with respect to the disk, Toshiba's new drive arranges these particles in an upright fashion, allowing a greater storage density of approximately 16GB per square inch. See a recent C|net report for more information.
Will we see an 80GB iPod Photo sometime in 2005? We're certainly betting on it.
