Cornell University is currently providing use of the Napster online music download service to its student body, free of charge to the students. Beyond 2005, however, funding would be drawn from the student body at the cost of $20 per student. 6-7% of students are Mac users and as many as 70% of students with portable digital music players are using iPods. Napster is incompatible with both the Macintosh and the iPod and as such it is easy to understand a good swath of such students not being overly keen on handing over $20/year. Will Cornell head to the iTunes Music Store as Duke recently has, given the not highly viable nature of their current plan?
