We are happy to convey news that will come as a dream-come-true to countless Linux users throughout the land: iTunes has come to Linux. But not ... exactly ... from Apple.
CodeWeavers make a Linux product known as CrossOver Office which allows certain Windows applications to run in the Linux environment. With this application, Linux users have been running Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Dreamweaver, QuickTime, and more. As it turns out, and not surprisingly, the application that CodeWeavers has received the most requests for is iTunes. With the latest version of CrossOver Office (v3.1), those wishes have been granted. (See screenshot here.)
At present, v3.1 is only available to registered CrossOver Office users, but a full public release is planned for sometime later this year. And as CodeWeavers points out, it won't stop with iTunes:
"We remain confident that by the end of 2005, the majority of Windows applications will be supported by CrossOver Office. Until then, we're pleased to be bringing the appeal of iTunes to Linux users through the development of version 3.1."
Given the capabilies brought forth in the latest version of this killer application, it seems the right time to extend a warm and harty welcome to all the music-loving Linux users out there! As all the iTunes-addicted Mac and Windows users here would agree, the best on-line music download service is now at your fingertips. And once you jump in, there's no turning back!
